Cherry Blossoms Blossoming
Yesterday, we saw the first local cherry blossoms come out, just two flowers! This morning, what a difference! There are cherry blossoms everywhere! Although its not even close to peak here, the NPS just declared peak bloom for the Washington DC cherry blossoms, about a week earlier than predicted due to recent unseasonably warm temperatures.

An Hour of Snow
There was snow forecast to the north this morning but it ended up heading down south a bit resulting in an hour or so of nice heavy snow! It was sufficient to lightly coat the ground and the trees as well as make the sidewalks rather slippery.

Even More Snow and Ice!
It’s been a good year for snow. Not that we’ve really had any significant accumulation but its better than nothing! Yesterday, it snowed for a little bit but turned to freezing rain earlier than expected. This resulted in an accumulation of ice on top of the snow. And then it snowed a bit more this morning. Luckily, this combination of snow and ice wasn’t too bad. Most surfaces hadn’t really been cleared of snow yesterday and luckily were not slippery today!

We weren’t really expecting to get a good amount of snow today but we did! It was only a few inches, 3 to 4, but it stuck really nicely to the ground and trees! Definitely the prettiest snow this season.

Yesterday, we tried and failed to observe the Saturn and Jupiter planetary conjunction due to clouds moving in around sunset. Today, we drove to Kerr Dam and Reservoir in Virginia near the border with North Carolina to get clear and dark skies.

Winter in Shenandoah National Park
After consulting Astrospheric, we decided to head to Shenandoah National Park to see the Jupiter and Saturn conjunction that is currently taking place. Tomorrow is supposed to be the closest that they will appear in the sky but tonight’s forecast was more favorable. Also, today is the first day that any of Skyline Drive, the road through the park, was open after the storm a few days ago. We were hoping to see some snow!

Snow in Maryland and West Virginia
The nor’easter yesterday blanketed western Maryland with snow. There wasn’t a huge amount of snow on the ground in the places we visited but it was still quite beautiful!
We were originally planning on driving to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia but Skyline Drive, the road through the park, was closed due to snow. We decided to visit some places in Maryland while waiting to see if any parts of Skyline Drive would open. Ultimately, none did.
