Local Cherry Blossom Peak Bloom
Peak bloom for the Washington DC cherry blossoms was officially declared yesterday by the National Park Service. Locally, its about the same! There has been a bit of rain recently but that doesn’t seem to have impacted the blossoms negatively at all.

First Cherry Blossoms of 2023
While the official National Park Service bloom watch shows the Tidal Basin cherry trees as just entering the puffy white stage today, some of our local cherry blossoms are already blooming! We found a few examples by a local road and other ones that are likely going to start opening very soon. Also in the region, we’re waiting for the cherry trees at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens to bloom, that is expected to happen at the end of the month.

Frankfurt Altstadt
We spent the last morning walking around Frankfurt‘s old town area and crossed over the Main on the Eiserner Steg, a pedestrian bridge. The weather was good though cloudy with just a bit of drizzle at times. It ultimately did rain quite hard after we left the city.

Mainz
We headed out this morning to spend the day in Mainz, where the Main joins the Rhine. We saw a variety of sights including Roman ruins and old churches as well as the Rhine. One thing we did not see was the Gutenberg Museum as it is closed on Mondays!

Schloss Heidelberg
We headed south to Heidelberg this morning to visit Schloss Heidelberg, the castle up on the hill above the city. The weather was a bit iffy with a bit of snow and rain on the trip down but luckily it remained mostly dry while we were in old town Heidelberg. It was a bit cold though with a bit of snow on the ground and dark with an overcast sky.

Sankt Goar and Bacharach on the Rhine
We took the train to two little towns on the Rhine, Sankt Goar and Bacharach. At each, we hiked up to a castle and then back down again. The weather was nice, particularly in the morning when it wasn’t cloudy at all. It was still rather cold when the wind was blowing though.

Frankfurt am Main
After arriving in the morning at the Frankfurt Airport, we headed right into the city on the S-Bahn. We ended up walking a bit around the downtown area before heading up to the observation deck atop Main Tower. Afterwards, we took the S-Bahn again across the Main River to have lunch. It soon started to pour as we were walking on the riverfront. We went to the Stadel Museum to dry off and to look at the art. By the time we left, it wasn’t raining much at all. We crossed the river via the Holbeinsteg, the bridge in front of the museum. We then headed to the old town area where we ended the day.

A Winter Day at the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
We headed to the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens after lunch today. It was snowing a bit when we arrived, though it was too warm for any of it to stick. At the gardens, we saw some flowers that had been planted. A few trees were beginning to bloom, perhaps a bit earlier this year due to recent warm weather across the region. As for birds, we didn’t see too many, mostly a few Canada Geese near the entrance and quite a few American Crows flying around.

The Thames by Parliament
We went out this morning for a quick loop on both sides of the Thames between Lambeth Bridge and Westminster Bridge. The sky was completely overcast and there was a very light drizzle at times. It was relatively warm in the upper 40s and calm which made for a nice walk.
