Great Falls, Virginia

Great Falls and Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
We started our day at the Maryland side of the Great Falls, a section of rapids on the Potomac river that separates Maryland and Virginia. This area is part of the C&O Canal National Historic Park. It was foggy when we arrived but rather nice when we got to the viewpoint in the middle of the river. Afterwards, we headed to an early lunch and then onward to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. We were there to see what birds were around and to check out the fall foliage. But it seems we’ve missed much of fall already!

Lucerne and Pilatus
We started the day by talking a walk in the historic old town section of Lucerne around the river Reuss. We then took the boat to Alpnachstad where we boarded the world’s steepest cog railway up to the top of Pilatus. We enjoyed a mix of beautiful scenery and being completely enveloped by clouds. Afterwards, we headed back down via aerial tram and gondola. We returned to Lucerne by bus to end the day.

Gornergrat to Trockener Steg
While we’ve been lucky to have beautiful weather during the last two days while we’ve been by Zermatt, today the weather turned for the worse. Lots of clouds! In the afternoon, the Matterhorn was no longer visible for the first time during our time here. We ended up taking the train from Gornergrat to Zermatt and then the gondola and aerial tram up to Trockener Steg. We ended up doing a short hike and then returning to Zermatt as the weather wasn’t getting any better.

Gornergrat to Riffelberg
We decided to do a hike down to the Riffelsee lake in the late morning from Gornergrat. It was quite beautiful. We decided to continue onward to Riffelberg rather than returning from the nearby Rotenboden station. We passed by a smaller but even more beautiful lake on our way. Ultimately, we ended up hiking for much longer and further than we had planned!

Gornergrat Night and Morning
Last night, or rather this morning, we went out to photograph the Matterhorn at night with the Milky Way in the background. We had to do it twice due to the Moon still being up the first time. Later on, we caught the Matterhorn glowing during sunrise.
