We spent the last morning walking around Frankfurt‘s old town area and crossed over the Main on the Eiserner Steg, a pedestrian bridge. The weather was good though cloudy with just a bit of drizzle at times. It ultimately did rain quite hard after we left the city.

We headed out this morning to spend the day in Mainz, where the Main joins the Rhine. We saw a variety of sights including Roman ruins and old churches as well as the Rhine. One thing we did not see was the Gutenberg Museum as it is closed on Mondays!

We headed south to Heidelberg this morning to visit Schloss Heidelberg, the castle up on the hill above the city. The weather was a bit iffy with a bit of snow and rain on the trip down but luckily it remained mostly dry while we were in old town Heidelberg. It was a bit cold though with a bit of snow on the ground and dark with an overcast sky.

We took the train to two little towns on the Rhine, Sankt Goar and Bacharach. At each, we hiked up to a castle and then back down again. The weather was nice, particularly in the morning when it wasn’t cloudy at all. It was still rather cold when the wind was blowing though.

After arriving in the morning at the Frankfurt Airport, we headed right into the city on the S-Bahn. We ended up walking a bit around the downtown area before heading up to the observation deck atop Main Tower. Afterwards, we took the S-Bahn again across the Main River to have lunch. It soon started to pour as we were walking on the riverfront. We went to the Stadel Museum to dry off and to look at the art. By the time we left, it wasn’t raining much at all. We crossed the river via the Holbeinsteg, the bridge in front of the museum. We then headed to the old town area where we ended the day.
